Well, the day has arrived. After 19 incredibly rewarding years helping build Google Maps, working alongside brilliant minds on everything from 3D models for Google Earth to leading engineering teams who automated map making with AI, I’ve officially hit “logout” one last time. Today marks my retirement from Google.
It’s a profound moment, stepping away from a place and a role that has been such a significant part of my life. I'm immensely grateful for the challenges, the growth, and especially the people I had the privilege to work with.
Now, I find myself navigating a different kind of map – the transition into retirement. It’s a landscape filled with excitement for what lies ahead, mixed with the healthy unknowns that come with any major life change. It feels a bit like stepping up to the base of a challenging Colorado climb – you’ve prepared, you’re excited, but you also know you won’t figure out the precise route until you get going.
So, what am I looking forward to on this new trail? Definitely more time exploring the incredible Colorado outdoors that I love – hiking, camping, and finding new routes to climb. More space to be curious, learn new things, and simply be. But most importantly, more precious moments with my wonderful wife and two daughters.
Consider this space, Changing Coordinates, my digital basecamp for sharing this journey. I plan to write about:
Navigating the shift from a demanding tech career to retirement.
Reflections and lessons learned from my time in software engineering and leadership.
Adventures (and misadventures!) in the mountains and beyond.
Exploring new interests and figuring out what’s next.
If you’re curious about life after big tech, the retirement transition, leadership insights, or just enjoy tales from the Colorado trails, I’d be delighted if you’d subscribe and join the conversation.
Thanks for reading, and I look forward to sharing what’s around the next bend.
Brian
